In this workshop, Dr Daffern introduces you to a high-quality, multi-tiered system of support for teaching the components of spelling in Years 3 to 6. Drawing on her extensive spelling research and teaching experiences, Dr Daffern will share some examples of assessing and teaching the components of spelling using a data-informed, explicit and structured approach. This includes providing opportunities for students to apply taught spelling skills in a range of writing contexts.
Content includes:
- Why instruction and learning in spelling is important.
- Key features of a quality, multi-tiered system of support for spelling instruction.
- Using valid and reliable spelling assessment data to inform a multi-tiered approach.
- Teaching the phonological component of spelling.
- Teaching the orthographic component of spelling.
- Teaching the morphological component of spelling.
