This printable PDF resource provides background information on the research underpinning a cognitive process informed by Triple Word Form Theory, known as Crossmapping using multiple linguistic lenses. Crossmapping is an explicit instructional strategy that supports both spelling development and vocabulary learning.
Crossmapping involves analysing words through multiple linguistic lenses and is Daffern’s practical, classroom ready instructional framework that brings evidence based, high quality literacy instruction to life. It can be easily integrated into any existing instructional program.
Dr Daffern’s guiding questions stem from her PhD research and have been used in subsequent studies, including randomised control trials and case studies. Daffern was the first to develop and trial this instructional framework through extensive empirical research. Her innovative approach can be used flexibly when teaching all learners—from beginning writers to more advanced learners—and across all year levels and subject areas.
The final page of this resource includes the practical framework ready for printing, display, and classroom use. It provides a list of key guiding questions that can be used flexibly to analyse words from phonological, orthographic, and morphological lenses. Etymological considerations are embedded within both the orthographic and morphological lenses to align with the research evidence. At present, there is no empirical research to justify dedicating guiding questions to a stand alone or discrete etymology lens (2026).
